Carsharing

Get wheels when you need them.

Cars are expensive. They’re expensive to buy, and they’re expensive to fuel, insure, and maintain. If you pay extra for parking at home, then you’re paying to not use your car.

In 2017, the average American spent 17% of their income on transportation. A fifth of that was on gas. A handful of companies are proving that people don’t need to own a car to have reliable access to one. These companies are promoting carsharing as an alternative to car ownership. Some of these services are available in Contra Costa County.

Míocar (Richmond)

Míocar is a revolutionary 100% electric vehicle (EV) car sharing service. Members can access vehicles at locations across Richmond on an hourly or daily basis. As a member, you can book a car online or by downloading the Míocar Networks smartphone app.

Míocar members must be 21 years of age or older, have a valid driver’s license (this includes AB60 license holders), and a valid credit, debit, or prepaid card.

GIG Car Share (El Cerrito)

Gig’s fleet of hybrid cars with bright blue bike racks serve the communities of Emeryville, Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, Albany, San Francisco, and now El Cerrito. Gig is one-way car sharing – you can pick it up in Downtown Berkeley and drop it off in Jack London Square. You can take the cars anywhere in the U.S. as long as you bring them back to the Bay Area HomeZone.

The El Cerrito portion of the HomeZone includes parking spots at both BART stations (four at El Cerrito Del Norte, and two at El Cerrito Plaza). Between these two stations, it also covers roughly half a square mile of the city along Richmond Street between Eureka Avenue and Blake Street and several surrounding blocks.

All-inclusive pay-as-you-go pricing means each trip you take is totally covered, from gas to insurance. There are no application or membership fees. Pay by the minute, hour or day. Check out the Gig website for full pricing details.
