New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in the Bay Area this month to discuss green buildings and waste reduction with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. He flew into SFO by private jet, but swiped his BART card like the rest of us to get into downtown San Francisco.
Rider @senatori from Concord snapped this picture with his phone and expressed his surprise on Twitter in real time.
The San Francisco Chronicle took the opportunity to reminisce on the puns of yesteryear.
We’ll see what becomes of the friendly, at-least-one-sided rivalry former Mayor Gavin Newsom cultivated with Bloomberg.
Newsom, ever the competitor, delighted in publicly pointing out areas where San Francisco surpassed New York.
When the city a year ago hit the 57 percent mark for converting the taxi fleet to hybrids and compressed natural gas vehicles, Newsom declared: “The good news is we’ve made progress. The bad news is New York has not.”
At the time, Bloomberg’s conversion plan was stymied by a taxicab group suing and winning in federal court.
“To Mayor Bloomberg, we have done it,” Newsom said then. “We beat you on this. … The Big Apple is not the green apple yet.”
The lesson here – look up from your Kindle every now and then. You never know who you’ll see.
