Clipper Expands in Contra Costa (Nov. 2015)

Color Clipper LogoThe wait is over! Clipper is now accepted on County Connection, WestCAT, Wheels (LAVTA) and Tri Delta Transit buses. Here is some information to help you get started using Clipper:
How to Get a Clipper Card: If you don’t already have a Clipper card, you can order one by phone, visit ClipperCard.com, or purchase one at transit agency ticket offices and select retail stores. (Details)
31-Day Pass vs. Cash: You can use a 31-Day Pass or cash value on a Clipper card. To determine the best value for you, visit the appropriate fare page:

Clipper Discounts: Clipper offers discount cards for youths and seniors. Customers with disabilities may also receive a discount card through the Regional Transit Connection (RTC) program. (Details)
Clipper Applies Transit Agency Discounts: Each transit agency offers its own discounted fares, passes, and/or tickets for adults, youths, seniors and passengers with disabilities. When you use cash value on a Youth, Senior or RTC Clipper card, Clipper automatically applies any available discounts for which you are eligible.
Routes Which Now Accept Clipper:

  • Tri Delta Transit: All fixed routes.
  • County Connection: All regular and express fixed routes except routes 250 and 260 and the Alamo Creek Shuttle.
  • WestCAT: All routes except the local portion of the Lynx route. If you ride a Lynx bus for a local trip, you should pay your fare in cash, or Clipper will charge you a transbay fare.
  • Wheels: All fixed routes.

How to Use Clipper: Tag your card by holding it flat against the Clipper logo on the Clipper card reader, and wait for the beep and green light. If your card balance is low, the reader will beep twice and display a yellow light. You can still board the bus, but you will need to add value to your card before your next trip. If you do not have enough value on your card, the reader will beep three times and display a red light, and you will not be able to pay your fare with Clipper.
Transfers Between Bus Systems: Clipper automatically grants you one free transfer from other Wheels, County Connection, Tri Delta Transit and WestCAT routes. If you are transferring to a transit service that does not accept Clipper, you should request a paper transfer.
Day Pass: A Day Pass gives you unlimited rides on a single day: $3.75 for adults and youth, $1.75 for senior and RTC customers. The Day Pass is a regional pass good on most Tri Delta Transit, County Connection, WestCAT and Wheels routes. You get the Day Pass discount automatically – once you pay $3.75 in fares in a day on any combination of the participating transit services, your rides will be free of charge for the rest of that day. Free transfers and fares paid on WestCAT Lynx Transbay service do not apply toward a Day Pass.
For more information on how using Clipper works with regard to a specific transit agency, visit ClipperCard.com and click the logo of the transit agency you’re interested in.

New Hillcrest Park & Ride Lot is Almost Ready to Open (2014)

Old Hillcrest Park & RideCommuters catching Tri Delta Transit buses at the current Hillcrest Park & Ride on a typical weekday afternoon

Big changes are coming up for the Hillcrest Park & Ride lot located in Antioch at the corner of Hillcrest Avenue and Sunset Drive.  Starting Sunday, February 16, 2014, commuters will be parking a bit further up on Sunset Drive on Lot A of the upcoming eBART station.

Hillcrest Park&Ride Layout 2

The new parking lot will feature an additional 94 spaces for commuters.  The bus loading area will also be relocated to an area adjacent to the future eBART station.  Tri Delta Transit and other transit operators are recommending that you allow additional time to catch your bus.   In anticipation of some confusion to the new changes, signs and ambassadors will be on site Tuesday, February 18th to help commuters.

Hillcrest Park & Ride
Hillcrest Park & Ride

511 Contra Costa is excited to see that the new Hillcrest Park & Ride lot is almost ready to open to the public.  It looks like finishing touches are being put into place when staff stopped by for a preview.

By the end of 2017, all 1,000 spaces of BART’s Antioch (eBART) Station parking lot will be available for use for drivers who use Tri Delta Transit, eBART and other local public transit systems.  And what will happen to the current parking lot?  The old Hillcrest Park and Ride will be demolished to clear space for freeway onramps and offramps.

Frank's Big Adventure

When was your last big adventure? Here’s a great story of how someone spent their entire day on the Tri Delta Transit bus for just $3.35 – we hope it inspires you to take one of your own!

My truck had been in the shop for a few days. I had a bad case of wanderlust. A bus stop is just 400 ft. from my front door. I had never been on it.  I promised myself I would. I headed out the door with no definite plan and bought a day pass ($3.35) that really is a 24 hour ticket. It allows you to ride anywhere on Tri Delta Transit system for 24 hours. I walked to a bus stop. It was there that I met Sam S.  He was a friendly guy, on his way to work.  Before boarding he thoughtfully offered me his bus schedule with a tip “you’re going to want this.”
The highlight on the first leg of my journey was passing over HWY 4 on the Loveridge Rd. overpass and seeing workers in the piling pits with cranes operating all around. Thinking I was ready to stop (or was it drink a beer), I got off at the Park & Ride stop on Bliss Ave. in Pittsburg and walked  to the La Pinata Mexican restaurant. I was served a basket of warm corn chips and spicy salsa with my beer order. Many patrons were drinking a bloody mary type beer, and I was tempted to try a tequila flight, but  was anxious to get on with my adventure and headed back to the bus stop.
The next bus was a 391 eastbound. I jumped off at Hillcrest Ave, which is the hub of the system. Buses were changing route numbers faster than I could look them up in the schedule. I was wanting the 383 eastbound and ended up on the 388 eastbound and headed down Lone Tree Way.
Knowing Schooner’s Grill and Brewery would be a good stop to eat a late lunch I jumped off at Dallas Ranch Rd. A 15 minute walk, I was hungry and thirsty. I ordered a bacon burger slider with bbq sauce and fries, a beer sampler, and checked emails on the free WIFI. The slider was tasty. Still hungry and ordered the inferno wings, and a pint of the Irish Red beer. I headed out, crossed the street, and waited for a bus. In less than 10 minutes the 392 westbound whisked me away again.
It was close to 6PM, I decided to head to Celia’s Mexican Restaurant. A margarita would be a nice night cap to the day and give me a little more bang for my $3.35 ticket. I checked the schedule again for about the 100th time and the 388 bus was due in about 10 minutes. I drank the margarita down, just below brain freeze speed. I saw the bus coming before I even got to the stop. I was home in time for dinner with Peggy and the start of the Giants vs. A’s series opener.
I didn’t see any thugs all day. I saw babies and elders, some in wheel chairs using the system. The drivers were all courteous and helpful. The only problem I had was of the 6 buses I rode, only one had the air conditioner on. I didn’t see anyone with a window open and didn’t ask if I was permitted to open a window.
I’m looking forward to doing this again and transferring bus to bus like an old spiderman or at least a veteran of the Tri Delta Transit system. Maybe I can pass on the schedule, Sam S., gave me to another rookie bus rider suffering wanderlust.
